March 1st is a traditional Romanian holiday called Martisor that celebrates spring.  It's customary to wear a symbolic brooch tied with a string made of red and white silk with tassels at the ends. Most often, the brooches are in shape of snowdrops, which signify the beginning of spring in Romania as they break through patches of frozen, harsh snow with their delicate yet strong white flowers. They are a symbol of hope for better days and renewal.
 
Today I cannot help but think of the resilience of snowdrops.  My heart is heavy for the conflict in Ukraine, and while this brings back hard memories of growing up in communist Romania, during the years of Soviet Union oppression, I can’t help but hope that, like the snowdrops, all that is good and pure will prevail and democracy and freedom will soon be restored in Ukraine.

While I am so grateful to live in the US which has been my home for more than three decades, I pray for all affected by this senseless war. My thoughts and prayers are with those fighting for their freedom and with the displaced families and children forced to leave their homes overnight who are enduring the harsh winter cold and a lack of basic supplies and medicine in the middle of a pandemic.
 
It's heartwarming to see the help Romania, other neighboring countries, NATO, the EU, and US are lending the refugees and those fighting in Ukraine. And I hope and pray that this insane war all be over soon!
